Appeal Points

[Our marathon support: turning smiles into strength]

The Setagaya 246 Half Marathon was first held in November 2005, and this year marks its 20th anniversary.

Our sports promotion committee members are mainly engaged in providing support at reception and distance points along the course.

Every time I see the athletes running towards the finish line and their satisfied smiles, I feel that it was worth doing.

This is a valuable opportunity to be a part of supporting the tournament and experience the joy of promoting local sports culture.

The joy of running and the enthusiasm that supports it. A Setagaya autumn tradition.

The half marathon has a capacity of 2,000 runners. The course starts at Komazawa Olympic Park Athletics Stadium, passes through National Route 246, Futako Tamagawa Station, and the Tama River Cycling Course, turns around at the border between Setagaya and Komae, and returns to the stadium via Meguro Street and Komahachi Street.

A wide range of runners, from beginners to advanced runners, will be participating, including top athletes from Komazawa University and Aoyama Gakuin University, who are regular participants in the Hakone Ekiden.

There are also a variety of categories available, including 24.6m, 800m, 1600m, and 5000m time trials, as well as a division for disabled runners, making this a competition that anyone can take on.

Entries are accepted from July 1st to July 31st each year. The competition is extremely popular, with a 2-3 times higher chance of winning.

While I was working in the PTA at my child's elementary school, I was recommended by a senior sports promotion committee member and thought I could help the community, so I started working there, and I'm still doing it today.

What kind of activities do you usually do as a sports promotion committee member?

As the head of the training department, I work with the members to come up with training content so that newly appointed committee members can carry out their activities with confidence, and I coordinate to ensure that training sessions run smoothly. In addition, on a personal level, I introduce "new sports" to children in the community, and help out with local events and learning seminars held by the Town Planning Center and the General Branch Promotion Division.

What do you think are the attractions and rewards of being a sports promotion committee member that you have found while working as one?

We want to teach both children and adults that physical activity is fun.

Also, when participants tell me they had fun, I feel happy and rewarded.

Please tell us what you are focusing on and what you are coming up with to hold the 20th Setagaya 246 Half Marathon, and how you are involved as a sports promotion committee member.

The sports promotion committee members are mainly involved in reception, placards, and course observation.

When holding up placards on the course, runners stand with the intention of making them easily visible. As Hakone Ekiden runners run alongside ordinary runners, the speed at which they run near the placards is powerful and impressive.

Also, there are many cheers in the residential areas, and it is moving to see the runners responding to them as they run.

This year too, we would like to ensure that all runners can run safely and enjoyably.

Lastly, please give a message to the citizens of Tokyo!
